Cybersecurity Talent Gathers to Grow Skill Sets and Address Workforce Shortage

Arlington, VA, July 29, 2014 – U.S. Cyber Challenge (USCC) will host its Summer Cyber Camp program in partnership with Moraine Valley Community College from August 4-8, 2014, in Palos Hills, Illinois. The camp includes four days of intensive instruction by SANS instructors, a career fair, and a cyber attack and defense competition with an awards ceremony to honor the winners and participants. Over 30 individuals will participate in this year’s Illinois USCC Cyber Camp, including a number of U.S. Military veterans.

“In our nation today, we continue to see a significant gap in the demand for high level cybersecurity professionals and the number of individuals who are capable of filling those much needed roles,” said Erich Spengler, Director of the National Center for Systems Security and Information Assurance (CSSIA), “Therefore, hands-on programs like U.S. Cyber Challenge’s summer cyber camps are integral in closing the gap and providing our nation’s businesses and institutions with top caliber cybersecurity professionals.”

Curriculum at the Illinois camp will include in-depth workshops on a range of topics including reverse engineering malware, penetration testing, and tactical attacks, all taught by college faculty, SANS Institute senior instructors, and other cybersecurity experts.

The week will be capped off by a virtual “Capture the Flag” competition and awards ceremony on Friday, August 8, 2014.  The competition will begin at 8:30 AM and the awards ceremony will begin at 1:00 PM at Fogelson Theater located on the campus of Moraine Valley Community College (9000 W. College Parkway, Palos Hills, Illinois, 60465).  Both events, the competition and awards ceremony, are open to the media.  The awards ceremony will include remarks from Director of CSSIA Erich Spengler, President of Moraine Valley Community College Dr. Sylvia M. Jenkins, Lead for the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Dr. Ernest McDuffie, Chief Operating Officer for the Council on CyberSecurity Maurice Y. Uenuma, and U.S. Cyber Challenge National Director Karen S. Evans.

The camp is supported in part through sponsorships by (ISC)2 Foundation, SE Solutions, iSight Partners, Threat Space, NIC, CyberAces, the Association for Federal Information Resources Management (AFFIRM), Avue Technologies, SANS Institute, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, Department of Homeland Security, the Federal CIO Council, Cyber Ninjas, Kearney & Company, Deep Water Point, The Coleman Group, VMD, Valente & Associations, AMBIT, REI Systems, VISA and Accenture. Dell Secureworks is a local sponsor for the Illinois cyber camp.

Over 30 individuals will be attending the Illinois camp. Attendees to the invitation-only camps were selected based in part on their scores from Cyber Quests, an online competition offered through USCC in April that drew over 1,600 participants from over 700 schools nationwide.

The 2014 Cyber Summer Camp Series features two national weeklong camps and two statewide camps. The camps are part of several initiatives underway through USCC, a national campaign focused on identifying and developing cybersecurity talent to meet the country’s critical cybersecurity workforce needs.
