Highly skilled cybersecurity participate in competitive challenge hosted by Delaware Universities

Newark, DE, July 25, 2014 – U.S. Cyber Challenge (USCC) is proud to announce the winners of the Delaware Summer Cyber Camp competition. This morning, over 60 camp participants were divided into teams to compete in the “Capture the Flag” competition with the winning team comprised of Robert Crissman of Dover, Delaware; David Hom of Smyrna, Delaware; Helen Meehan of Newark, Delaware; Phillip Petty of Camden, Delaware; and Jesse Samluk of Wilmington, Delaware.

U.S. Cyber Challenge, in partnership with the University of Delaware, Wilmington University, Delaware Technical Community College, Delaware State University and the State of Delaware, hosted the U.S. Cyber Challenge Delaware Summer Cyber Camp in Newark.  The camp was conducted July 21-25 and included four days of instruction by SANS instructors, a career fair and today’s cyber competition. Since 2010, 191 students have graduated from the USCC Delaware Cyber Camp.

An awards ceremony followed this morning’s competition at 1:30pm at the University of Delaware’s Gore Hall. The awards ceremony included remarks from U.S. Senator Tom Carper, Delaware Governor Jack Markell, Delaware Chief Security Officer Elayne Starkey, Delaware Secretary of Education Mark Murphy, USCC National Director Karen S. Evans, University of Delaware professor Dr. Ken Barner, and Technology and Founding Partner of The Ambit Group John Condon.

“Many of us have witnessed the damage that can be done from a cyber attack,” said Senator Carper, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. “Unfortunately we know these attacks are growing and that our critical infrastructure, government systems and businesses are still very vulnerable. Both the private and public sectors have great needs in acquiring highly skilled cybersecurity professionals and it is through such programs as these that we will be able to meet the demands.”

Over 60 individuals attended the Delaware Cyber Camp. Attendees to the invitation-only camp were selected based in part on their scores from Cyber Quests, an online competition offered through the U.S. Cyber Challenge (USCC) in April that drew over a thousand participants from over 700 schools nationwide.

During the camp, participants learned about opportunities available to them through USCC, its partners and through www.CyberCompEx.org – a social networking platform for cybersecurity enthusiasts. The workforce shortage of cybersecurity professionals is the primary concern of U.S. Cyber Challenge. These camps are therefore structured to encourage workforce development and closing the shortage gap.

The camp is supported in part through sponsorships by (ISC)2 Foundation, SE Solutions, iSight Partners, Threat Space, NIC, CyberAces, the Association for Federal Information Resources Management (AFFIRM), Avue Technologies, SANS Institute, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, Department of Homeland Security, the Federal CIO Council, Cyber Ninjas, Kearney & Company, Deep Water Point, The Coleman Group, VISA, VMD, Valente & Associations, AMBIT, REI Systems and Accenture. Local sponsors include Wilmington University, Delaware State University, University of Delaware and PJM.

The 2014 Cyber Summer Camp Series features two national weeklong camps and two statewide camps.  The camps are part of several initiatives underway through USCC, a national campaign focused on identifying and developing cybersecurity talent to meet the country’s critical cybersecurity workforce needs.
