Idaho Falls, ID, July 3, 2013 – U.S. Cyber Challenge (USCC) will host its Summer Cyber Security Camp program in conjunction with the University of Delaware, Delaware State University, Wilmington University, Delaware Technical Community College and the State of Delaware from July 8-12, 2013. The camp includes four days of intensive instruction by SANS instructors, a career fair, and a cyber-attack/defense competition with an awards ceremony to honor the winners of the competition.
Less than 10 percent of the estimated necessary 30,000 skilled security professionals are in the workplace. Addressing this gap is a significant priority for the nation and the U.S. Cyber Challenge Cyber Summer Camp is an important initiative for the advancement of the workforce. Due to the services and programs offered by U.S. Cyber Challenge, cyber security talent is proactively taught by leading professionals and instructors in the field, assessed in their abilities, and ultimately recruited by institutions in need of high level security skills.
The camp is designed to provide attendees with intensive training and other opportunities to enhance their skills and become the nation’s next generation of cybersecurity professionals. Camp curriculum includes in-depth workshops on a range of topics including penetration testing, packet crafting, tactical attacks, and forensics, all taught by college faculty, SANS Institute senior instructors, and other cybersecurity experts.
The week will be capped off by a virtual Capture the Flag competition and awards ceremony on Friday, July 12, 2013. The competition will begin at 9:00 AM and the awards ceremony will begin at 1:30 PM at the Audrey K. Doberstein Center located on the New Castle Campus of Wilmington University. Both events are open to the media. The awards ceremony will include remarks from Karen S. Evans, National Director of US Cyber Challenge; Allen Paller, SANS Institute; and Dr. Bernard McDuffie, National Institute of Standards and Technology.
The camp is supported in part through sponsorships by JMA and Heartland Technology Group, (ISC)2 Foundation, SE Solutions, Threat Space, NIC, Cigital, Engility, CyberAces, the Association for Federal Information Resources Management, Avue Technologies, SANS Institute, Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation, Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, SafeGov and the Federal CIO Council. Local sponsors include PJM, Hosting.com, Advantech, Wilmington University and Delaware State University.
Over 45 individuals will be attending the Delaware camp. Attendees to the invitation-only camps were selected based in part on their scores from Cyber Quests, an online competition offered through the U.S. Cyber Challenge (USCC) in April that drew over 1,400 participants from over 800 schools nationwide.
The camp participants will gain an understanding of the dimensions of the workforce shortage –and see how critical their technical skills are to the solution. They will also learn about opportunities available to them through USCC and its partners.
The 2013 Cyber Summer Camp Series features two national weeklong camps and two statewide camps. The camps are part of several initiatives underway through USCC, a national campaign focused on identifying and developing cyber security talent to meet the country’s critical cyber security workforce needs.
